FT Members Event

Date: 25 November 2011 at 1:30PM - 4:30PM

Location: Callington Road Hospital, Bristol

Almost 100 people attended the first major FT members event at Callington Road Hospital on Friday 25 November 2011.

Ft -march -3The event was organised by the Foundation Trust team, with the purpose of giving members a better idea of the aspects of work that AWP undertakes. A survey had been run in September and from this FT members had chosen several activities that they would like to have as part of the event.

The afternoon event was open by Felicity Longshaw Chair, who stressed the important role that members play within a Foundation Trust setting, providing a spectrum of opinion from across the Trust on a variety of issues such as delivery of services and changes to them. She thanked everyone for attending and that this was the first event of several being planned for 2012 as part of the Trusts desire to engage actively with members.

Ft -november -1Recognising the move to become a Foundation Trust had not been rapid, Felicity indicated that the Trust hoped shortly to move forward in the Dept of Health assessment phase and to become a Foundation Trust within the next calendar year.

In addition to talks from a service user and carer about how to lead a fulfilling life with a mental health condition, there were three workshops being run covering art therapy, relaxation and dementia. Members attending the event had already chosen their two options via the September survey.

There was also opportunity for members to find out more about AWPs work by visiting a numbers of information stalls; Volunteering, Improvement and Modernisation, Quality Accounts, PALS, Patient Council and R&D, involving DeNDRon, the South West Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network and also the recently launched Veterans Mental Health Service.

Before Felicity closed the event there was an opportunity for staff and members to be part of a chorus for a sing along, with around fifteen people volunteering. After a 20 minute rehearsal, the choir sang a three part harmony for all the attendees which was deemed a great success!

Initial feedback suggested the afternoon had been thoroughly enjoyed by all and Members were very pleased to here that there were plans to hold several more engagement events in 2012.
