Dragon Boat Race 2018
On Saturday 16th June, 6 teams of budding rowers assembled to
take part in Headlights second Dragon Boat Race event.
Many teams were well prepared calling on past experience and
teambuilding in the run up to the race, whilst some were created at
the last minute with final members added the very same morning!
Nonetheless, there was no lack of enthusiasm or comradery.
Although grey and overcast, the weather held out as the teams
took to the water to compete for the title of 'Headlight Dragon
Boat Champions 2018'.
After four great but gruelling rounds, the final four teams were
announced for the fifth and final heat; the atmosphere was buzzing
as competitive natures overtook and teams started to focus on the
prize. Crowds started to gather, faces painted in awash of colours
and glitter, cameras pointed, banners raised -
Third and Fourth position -

Second and First position - Behind enemy limes Vs. Not
fast but furious
The Headlight Pioneers put up a good fight, but were left far
behind as the Gold team sailed through the finish line taking the
The last race of the day saw everyone on their feet lined up
along the bank of the river, cheering and waving in support; the
two teams had their own huddles, exchanging words of encouragement,
and final tactics for the race before taking their places.
There were just over 4 seconds between the teams fastest times,
but would the fatigue of the day set in and prevent certain victory
for the newly assembled 'Not fast but furious'? Would 'Behind enemy
limes' seize the opportunity and snatch the trophy at the last
Although it was close for the first few metres (with a swan
attempting last minute sabotage!), 'Not fast but furious' pulled
away, crossing the line victorious as well as achieving the fastest
time of the day with a sub 1-minute charge across the water!
The event came to a close with everyone gathered around to
collect their prizes and celebrate the effort, team work, and
victories of the day:
• Not fast but furious (1st, fastest
• Behind enemy limes (2nd, Best dressed)
• Gold team (3rd)
• Headlight pioneers (4th, most money raised £1,721)
• Aspen Oars
• Boat folk racers
It wasn't just the Dragon Boat Racers that had reason to
celebrate - there was also victory for one family during the raffle
as they were able to take home much sought after 'Dylan the Dog'
amongst other prizes.
It's now been a week since the 2018 Dragon Boat Race - but the
money is still rolling in! We are now over the £5500 mark! This is
a fantastic amount of money for Headlight and we want to thank each
and every one of you for helping to reach this mark.
"A big thank you to everyone who took part, supported, and
raised funds for our charity. Hopefully we can build on the buzz
and make next year even bigger and better!" -
