Acclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Maguire to perform at Callington Road Hospital

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Maguire will be performing a lunchtime gig in the main reception at Callington Road Hospital at 1.00pm on Wednesday 13 April.

Emily, who has been regularly featured by Aled Jones on his Radio 2 show and is currently touring with Dr Hook's Dennis Locorriere, will also be reading from her book, Start Over Again, to mark its inclusion in AWP's staff libraries. Members of the public, as well as staff, service users and carers, are invited to drop in to hear Emily's songs and readings.

Start Over Again is Emily's moving and powerful account of her experiences of psychosis and depression, which she has published as part of her effort to tackle mental health stigma.

Emily said: "In early 2010 when I was touring as Caffè Nero's Artist of the Month, I became unwell and was supported by AWP's crisis resolution and home treatment team. With their support, rather than being hospitalised I was able to carry on with my touring schedule. I realise that it is the responsibility of all of us to be more aware of our mental health and to know when to seek help either for ourselves or for our friends or family members. The stigma that surrounds mental health is still a real barrier to that. I felt I was adding to that stigma by not talking about my own experiences so that's why I decided to publish Start Over Again and tell the real story behind my songs."

John Loy, AWP's chief librarian, added: "We are delighted that Emily is making time in her touring schedule to visit us at Callington Road. Start Over Again is a valuable addition to our staff libraries. It is a really vivid account of Emily's journeys into depression and psychosis, her story of living with bipolar disorder and a recognition that it can be managed, that it's just one part of who she is, not the whole thing. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Emily next Wednesday and to hearing her sing and read."

The event - which is free of charge - is happening in the main reception at Callington Road Hospital, Marmalade Lane, Brislington (next to Tesco) from 1.00pm until 1.30pm next Wednesday 13 April.
