AWP awarded innovative prison substance misuse contract

The Specialist Drug and Alcohol Service (SDAS), part of Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP), has been awarded a key contract to provide substance misuse services to HMP Bristol.

Designed by the Criminal Justice Service in SDAS, 'Inside Recovery' is an innovative model of psychosocial substance misuse services. It is the foundation of a contract that has recently been commissioned by NHS Bristol in conjunction with Safer Bristol Partnership.

'Inside Recovery' builds upon AWP's existing provision withinBristol's criminal justice system and treatment system. It is designed to deliver truly integrated services, addressing offenders' diverse needs, and working alongside colleagues in AWP's prison mental health team to offer a responsive and holistic service.

HMP Bristol is a busy prison with a diverse community of prisoners. Because of this, the new service required a design that was flexible enough to meet the needs of everyone requiring substance misuse support.

This new contract means that the Trust now offers services at all stages of the offender journey in Bristol - from arrest, to court, to prison and upon release.

"This is more than just keeping a contract we already had," said Martin McLean, Regional Criminal Justice Services Manager. "HMP Bristol and commissioners have embraced a completely new approach and we look forward to working on this exciting partnership with them."
