Eating Disorders Awareness Week: STEPs publication success
Great news to mark eating disorders awareness week:
clinicians at AWP's STEPs eating disorders service have achieved
publication in a highly respected professional
Angie Jakubowska, clinical lead, Melanie Woolgar, psychiatrist,
Polly Haselton, assistant psychologist, and Alysun Jones, clinical
psychologist, successfully negotiated the journal's lengthy and
rigorous submission process. Their article, which examines staff
and client experiences of a motivational group intervention, has
now been published in Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment
Their article discusses the design and set-up of a contemplation
group and follow-up of the participants. The 12-week programme was
aimed at clients who were not yet ready to make active changes,
helping them to explore their eating disorders in an environment
where change was not required.
101 people from 16 groups completed the programme. Many then
progressed into a range of active inpatient, community or
Melanie, a psychiatrist with STEPs, said, "We had very positive
outcomes from the group and we're really delighted to be published
and to contribute to the body of evidence in this field. It is the
result of sustained hard work by the whole STEPs team as well as
support from external experts.
"Staff as well as clients learned a huge amount from the group.
As well as helping us to understand the role that group
contemplation can play in people's eating disorders journeys, it
enabled us to listen on a deeper level and gave us new insights
into the relationships between clients and their eating
Feedback from participants included: "The freedom to talk and be
honest has made the biggest difference", "I have proved that I am
capable of starting something and finishing it", and "This is the
first time that I have heard people say they have no expectations
of me and I have been able to believe it".
