Eating Disorders Awareness Week: STEPs publication success

Great news to mark eating disorders awareness week: clinicians at AWP's STEPs eating disorders service have achieved publication in a highly respected professional journal.

Angie Jakubowska, clinical lead, Melanie Woolgar, psychiatrist, Polly Haselton, assistant psychologist, and Alysun Jones, clinical psychologist, successfully negotiated the journal's lengthy and rigorous submission process. Their article, which examines staff and client experiences of a motivational group intervention, has now been published in Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention.

Their article discusses the design and set-up of a contemplation group and follow-up of the participants. The 12-week programme was aimed at clients who were not yet ready to make active changes, helping them to explore their eating disorders in an environment where change was not required.

101 people from 16 groups completed the programme. Many then progressed into a range of active inpatient, community or outpatient treatments.

Melanie, a psychiatrist with STEPs, said, "We had very positive outcomes from the group and we're really delighted to be published and to contribute to the body of evidence in this field. It is the result of sustained hard work by the whole STEPs team as well as support from external experts.

"Staff as well as clients learned a huge amount from the group. As well as helping us to understand the role that group contemplation can play in people's eating disorders journeys, it enabled us to listen on a deeper level and gave us new insights into the relationships between clients and their eating disorders."

Feedback from participants included: "The freedom to talk and be honest has made the biggest difference", "I have proved that I am capable of starting something and finishing it", and "This is the first time that I have heard people say they have no expectations of me and I have been able to believe it".
