AWP staff nurse wins Costa First Novel award

Nathan Filer
Nathan Filer's debut novel about mental illness, death and grief - The Shock of the Fall - has won the 2013 Costa First Novel award.

Nathan's book was named as one of five category winners for the Costa Book Awards on Monday 6 January and will now compete for the overall Book of the Year prize which will be announced at an awards ceremony in London later this month.

The judges said: "It's hard to believe this is a first novel - it's so good it will make you feel a better person."

The book was published last year by Harper Collins following an eleven-way bidding auction, and is now due to be published in 12 countries.

Nathan says: "I'm delighted and feel very fortunate. What I want most is to share this story with people, and this prize will help that to happen."

Well done Nathan and good luck for the big prize!
