Involving service users in recruitment

Twelve peer mentors from the Specialised Drug and Alcohol Service (SDAS) have taken part in an interview training day hosted by Involvement Coordinators Penny Stanbury and Lee Rawlings.

As AWP continues in its efforts to put the service user at the centre of everything we do, it is important to have a service user or carer involved in the recruiting process and on the interview panel when recruiting staff.  Therefore, making sure that enough people are trained to be on interview panels is one of the top priorities of the Involvement Team.

The training day covers all the information and techniques needed for interviewing and shortlisting. We try to keep the session as informal and interactive as possible so that it doesn't become overwhelming or boring. At the end of the day, participants are presented with a certificate of attendance.

Penny Stanbury says 'The peer mentors I work with are always keen to be involved in helping us to improve our services, and what better way to do this than at the very beginning, when staff are recruited.'

The peer mentors all enjoyed the day and some great feedback was received:

The presentation was easy to understand and it was interesting to see how interviewing works and what it feels like interviewing others

I loved the informal way the training was given.  Everyone was very friendly and informative.

I found the interview training very well presented, professional and easy to understand.  I now feel confident that as a peer mentor I can fulfil this role and look forward to my first interview.

I did not know what to expect so everything was a bonus.  Not as overwhelming and heavy as I was expecting it to be.
