Going the extra mile to learn!

Never too old_250Two AWP doctors have achieved a Diploma in Geriatric Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians.

Dr Jonathan Hewitt, Consultant Psychiatrist and Dr Alison Lerant, Senior Trainee, pictured in front of The Coppice in Callington Road Hospital in Bristol, decided to undertake the Diploma self-funded, recognising that most of their elderly mental health patients, also have complex physical health problems. They both felt that this would help to improve the care they provide and to deliver more comprehensive treatment for their patients.

The diploma offers doctors the opportunity to review and consider all aspects of the care of older people and to be recognised as having this knowledge. This is particularly important at a time when the proportion of very elderly people in the population is rising dramatically.

This was a great achievement for the pair and was the first professional exam they had taken in 30 years!
