Commitment to suicide prevention

Suicide Prevention ConferenceThe Eighth Annual Suicide Prevention Conference took place in Keynsham last week.

Mental health care professionals and leaders in suicide prevention from across the country gathered at the Fry Club & Conference Centre to hear how the Trust is focusing on this important aspect of care.

AWP Chairman, Tony Gallagher, welcomed delegates and stated that the focus this year was on closing the gaps in transition points in care, a point when service users are most at risk.

Keynote speakers included Dr Matthew Fogarty (Head of Patient Safety Policy and Strategy at NHS England) and Karen Lascelles (Suicide Prevention Lead at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust).

AWP's Consultant Nurse and Suicide Prevention Lead Dr Anthony Harrison said, "It's easy to be negative regarding suicide but we can make a difference. We must focus on the fundamentals of patient safety to reduce the number of incidents." He stated the importance of risk assessments, care planning and engagement with carers and families.

The Trust is committed to maintaining the Suicide Prevention Conference as an annual event, continuously learning and working effectively to reduce suicide.
