STEPS socked it to eating disorders

EDAW250Activities in Bristol involving silly socks and a doctors' leg wax helped promote Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2017 and supported the Sock It to Eating Disorders Campaign organised by Beat.

Service users and staff from STEPS Eating Disorder Service pulled on their silly socks and organised an information stall in Southmead Hospital where they handed out resources to raise professional and public awareness of the different types of eating disorders.

The Service User Panel (SUP) also ran a fundraising event, inviting Hugh Herzig, Consultant Psychiatrist at STEPS to have a public leg waxing to raise money for eating disorders resources. To SUP's surprise he agreed as the photo testifies.

Created in August 2016, the SUP helps the STEPS service to improve by sitting on interview panels, co-delivering training, and providing feedback on the service.

STEPS service user and Chairman of the SUP, Katie Legge said: "Helping with fund raising initiatives and being involved with raising the profile of the STEPS service makes me feel valued and that I am doing something worthwhile. It also feels good to use many of my work skills.

"These activities also help build relationships between service users and service users and staff."

Katie went on to say: "AWP has fantastic service user involvement and I am sure that other Trusts could learn from us."

The group hope to do more of these types of events in the future.
