Mental Health Nurse takes on Arctic challenge

Kevin Stott

A mental health nurse from Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership (AWP) NHS Trust is currently in training for an Artic challenge.

Kevin Stott, who is part of the Safeguarding Team at Fromeside, Blackberry Hill, Bristol, will be braving temperatures as low as minus 35 Celsius when he takes part in the Headlight Arctic Challenge Finland Trek.

The challenge will test both physical and mental strength with participants cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and husky-sledding across a harsh but beautiful Scandinavian wilderness, taking in frozen lakes and snow-covered pine forest.

Kevin, who lives in Bristol, will be raising money for AWP's official charity Headlight. The charity works to provide projects which wouldn't be possible from NHS funding including enhancing care environments and providing additional recreational and therapeutic activities to improve the experiences and recovery of service users.

Speaking about the challenge ahead, Kevin said: "In 2017 I challenged myself to improve my physical fitness and embarked on an exercise and diet programme which has been massively successful and resulted in losing two stone.

"I have always wanted to travel to this part of the world and love snowy winter landscapes. I also want to be able to do something through my non-professional activities that can benefit others.

"There are so many aspects of the challenge I'm looking forward to but if I had to choose some it would be meeting others from all over the UK who have signed up to take part in the challenge and hear their stories, meeting our husky dog team and seeing the Northern Lights (hopefully!). I think some of the biggest challenges will be facing up to the cold as it can get down to minus 35 Celsius in January in Finland, keeping my balance on skis and braving the sauna where in Finland it's traditional to not wear clothes."

Kevin's challenge will take place between Saturday 12 and Wednesday 16 January 2019. To sponsor him please visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kevin-stott1
