Saddling up for wheelie tough cycling challenge

Mathew Page And Alan Metherall

Two mental health nurses are preparing to cycle over 900 miles from Gloucestershire to Barcelona to raise money for charity.

Mathew Page and Alan Metherall, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Director of Nursing, respectively, from Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership (AWP) NHS Trust, will be joined by Iain Hatherall, for the challenge which will start on Monday 30th September from Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire, at 8am.

The duo, who are both mental health nurses, are raising funds for the Trust's official charity Headlight, which raises money to fund projects and equipment to enhance the care provided to those with mental health difficulties at AWP.

The first leg of the journey will take them to the Trust's Headquarters in Bath, where they will be greeted by colleagues and supporters. They'll then cycle on to Fountain Way Hospital in Salisbury, before heading to Portsmouth and on to France, via ferry.

Speaking about the challenge, Mathew said: "Eleven years ago, myself and Alan cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats and we thought it was about time we set ourselves another challenge. It's going to be tough cycling over 900 miles in 11 days but the support from our colleagues along the way is sure to spur us on."

Alan said: "We are both keen cyclists and wanted to do something to support the Trust's charity whilst challenging ourselves. I'm always looking for ways to keep fit and healthy and this challenge will help both my physical and mental health, while raising money for a great cause."

The ride involves one of the toughest challenges in cycling - crossing the Pyrenees into Spain.

Headlight Fundraising Manager, Tia Shortall, said: "This is a really exciting and tough challenge, but both Mathew and Alan are keen cyclists and I know they can do it. Headlight works to enhance the services provided by AWP by funding projects and equipment to enrich our patients' experiences and journey towards recovery. Our staff are great supporters of the charity and it's great to see two very senior members of staff take on such a tough challenge to help our cause."

The team is hoping to raise £5,000 for Headlight. To sponsor the team visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mathew-page
