Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust (AWP) has been recognised as one of the leading mental health NHS Trusts for its approach to care planning, according to the NHS Community Mental Health Survey Benchmark Report 2023.

The NHS Community Mental Health Survey is part of the annual NHS Patient Survey Programme (NPSP), commissioned by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It collects feedback on adult inpatient care, maternity care, children and young people’s inpatient and day services, urgent and emergency care, and community mental health services.

The survey was completed by 278 patients, a 23 per cent completion rate, which is higher than the national average, showed that AWP performed about the same as or better than expected when compared with every other mental health trust in the UK.

In particular, the survey highlighted care planning and that in response to the questions: Do you have a care plan? And, In the last 12 months, have you had a care review meeting with your NHS mental health team to discuss how your care is working? AWP’s scores were among the best in the country.

Care planning plays an important role in mental health recovery, and we know that working with and involving patients in their care plan has a positive impact on overall outcomes.

The survey also recognised AWP as above the national average for:

  1. Crisis care support and the support we offer family and carers.
  2. How we support patients in other areas of life including their physical health needs
  3. Involvement in care, and how we support patients to make decisions about their own care.

The overall findings from the survey saw that out of the 33 questions asked AWP scored much better than expected on one, better than expect on three, Somewhat better than expected on three and about the same on 26 questions.
