Work to redevelop a hospital providing specialist care to adults experiencing acute mental illness in Bristol has commenced.

The £10.4 million investment project will support the transformation of acute inpatient services at Callington Road Hospital, run by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP).

In line with national recommendations, the NHS Trust has commissioned the redevelopment work which will include improved facilities, communal areas and accessible outdoor space for patients.

Construction started earlier this month and all aspects of the redevelopment have been designed to maximise the therapeutic outcomes for our patients. Together with the specialist care provided by the staff who will work there, this will support patients to reach their recovery goals quicker and reduce their time in hospital.

Simon Truelove, Director of Finance at AWP with responsibility for Estates, said “The redevelopment at Callington Road Hospital is a significant improvement for the patients that use our services including a large communal area that will allow patients to engage in group activities.”

“Our staff will also benefit from the larger working space, good visual observations of the ward, benefiting from the modern, clean and fresh interior”

Work is due to be completed by the end of 2024.
