Our commitment is to ensure you have a great start to your new role and receive the support you need to enjoy a fulfilling first year at AWP.

When you join our team, you will enter an induction and probation period to help you settle into your new role. Alongside your local manager and colleagues, our On-Boarding Team will keep in touch with you during your first year at AWP, checking in to see how things are going to ensure a smooth start.

Whether you are happy staying in one job, or want to use your role as a stepping stone, AWP will support you. As a large employer, we are part of the wider NHS ‘family’ which has one of the biggest workforces in the world. Our aim is to help you thrive and develop with us, while recognising the wider opportunities in the NHS too. We will support you to carry out mandatory and statutory training (MAST) that is essential to your role. We will also encourage you to access a wide range of other opportunities known as ‘continuing professional development’ (CPD), which may include doing an apprenticeship, to build your portfolio of skills and knowledge.

The NHS has attractive terms and conditions of employment, including its pay framework, generous paid leave and a great pension scheme. People in the NHS work hard, so when you join AWP you will start on 27 days paid leave per year (pro rata if you are part time). After five years your leave increases to 29 days, and after 10 years you will have 33 days of holiday a year, plus the public holidays.  AWP contributes approximately 20% of salary towards your pension scheme each year. If you are not eligible for the NHS Pension Scheme, for example you are a returning NHS pensioner, you will be enrolled into the NEST pension scheme.

As an NHS employee, you and your family will be able to take advantage of an extensive range of discounts from national and local organisations, encompassing wide-ranging products and services, including 50% off some big brands.

We understand how important it is to stay well, so we are committed to supporting your wellbeing. You will have access to a free 24-hour employee support service which provides guidance on legal and consumer issues, sickness absence and bereavement, child and elder care, relationships, stress and much more.

We value openness and inclusion at work, and we have deep respect for the diversity of our workforce, patients, service users, relatives, carers and visitors. Our policies and practices reflect our commitment to maintaining a diverse workforce and we are proud to be a ‘Disability Confident’ employer.

The work you carry out makes a vital difference to your community, which is why we love to recognise and celebrate success. Our Team of the Month and Staff Awards schemes are just two of the ways in which we do this. With more than 5000 people working for AWP, we take care to highlight the fantastic individual achievements.

A monthly catch-up and check-in is essential in helping people thrive at work. Alongside the day-to-day interactions, your manager will arrange to set aside time to talk to you regularly, including arranging your monthly one-to-one sessions, to review and support your progress.

We value the role that recognised trade unions and professional organisations can play in ensuring a positive environment. We work in partnership with many large and influential bodies, including the British Medical Association, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, the Royal College of Nursing, Unison, GMB and Unite. We value the contribution of the AWP Joint Union Council in helping to ensure that AWP continues to be a great place to work.
