Are you looking for a job where you can make a difference? Do you like the idea of working in the NHS? Are you interested in the experiences of people coping with mental health issues or Learning Disabilities? Join us as a healthcare support worker and see for yourself how much of a difference you can make to people’s lives.

What is a Healthcare Support Worker?

As a healthcare support worker you will work in a supportive team, providing care and treatment for people experiencing mental health conditions (and/or with learning disabilities). No two days are the same; it’s a hands-on, valuable role working alongside registered clinicians to deliver evidence-based interventions to make a significant contribution to service users’ psychological, emotional and social wellbeing.

Our services could not run without our healthcare support workers, they are at the very heart of what we do. As with all healthcare roles there will be challenges, but the rewards, satisfaction and ongoing support from a close-knit team of healthcare professionals far outweigh these. Don’t just take our word for it, take a listen to Sian’s story.

What types of things will I be doing as a Healthcare Support Worker at AWP?

You will be delivering day-to-day high quality care and recovery interventions for service users within clinical areas, in collaboration with, and under the indirect supervision of, registered clinicians. These may include:

  • supporting individuals with their mental health recovery i.e. physical wellbeing, food and fluids and personal care.
  • assisting service users with financial or accommodation issues.
  • escorting or accompanying service users for planned periods of leave on hospital grounds and in the community facilitating social inclusion.
  • encouraging service users to talk about their experiences in one-to-one or group discussions.

More than anything, though, healthcare support workers are present and available to give support, encouragement and comfort to people when they most need it. There are loads of skills you can learn on the job, but first and foremost you should be kind, caring and willing to get stuck into the role – it’s a hands-on environment where teamwork, communication and organisation skills are vital.
